Vopnafjörður fishmeal plant keeping busy

‘This year has got off to a great start, there’s no doubt about that. We have taken delivery of 18,000 tonnes of blue whiting this season  and during the capelin season we took 23,000 tonnes of capelin from our own vessels and 4400 tonnes landed here by Norwegian pelagic vessels,’ said Sveinbjörn Sigmundsson, factory manager at HB Grandi’s fishmeal plant in Vopnafjörður last week.

The factory was then working through a blue whiting catch delivered by Venus and Sveinbjörn Sigmundsson said that Víkingur is expected to start making its way from fishing grounds tonight or tomorrow morning. With 400 nautical miles to steam to Vopnafjörður, they expect to be able to start processing Víkingur’s catch at the weekend.

‘With these catch rates, we have non-stop production at the moment. We just have time to finish production and clean the plant before the next batch arrives,’ Sveinbjörn Sigmundsson said
